Lose credits if I transfer from one college to another?

I'm considering transferring to a University with a larger choice of programs. Am I going to lose credits or have to take classes over if I transfer schools? I know it's going to be different depending on the school, but does anyone have any experiences they'd like to share related to this issue? Good or bad is fine. Thanks!
